Cal State East Bay named to #CaliforniansForAll College Corps

Dear Cal State East Bay community,

On this first day of the Spring semester, I have terrific news to share with you. Cal State East Bay was named one of 45 campuses statewide for the inaugural #CaliforniansForAll College Corps. This college service program led by California Volunteers, Office of the Governor will provide thousands of undergraduate students awards up to $10,000 to help pay for college as they participate in paid community service fellowships during the academic year.

The fellowships will help students solve one of the most challenging roadblocks to their education by creating debt-free pathways to a college degree, particularly for low-income students and AB 540 eligible Dreamers.

For our university, this distinction is a meaningful acknowledgement of the service learning programs that already exist at Cal State East Bay. We look toward expanding relationships with regional partners that can benefit from students who are ready to tackle critical projects focused on K-12 education, food insecurity and other COVID-19 recovery, and climate change issues.

In addition to the community site engagement, students will participate in ongoing professional development and guided reflection opportunities that will prepare them to take their experiences into their careers. Cal State East Bay is joining forces with California State University, Monterey Bay, California State University, Stanislaus and San Francisco State to develop training materials and conferences.

As #CaliforniansForAll College Corps was just announced this morning by Gov. Newsom, the university is working quickly to design a recruitment portal and reaffirm partnerships for placement of our fellows. Mary D’Alleva, director for the university’s Center for Community Engagement and the principal investigator for the project, will work throughout campus and with partners to finalize Cal State East Bay’s recruitment and placement opportunities quickly. We expect to have the program open for application this spring, recruiting undergraduates of all majors.

I am looking forward to celebrating our students’ achievements as they participate in #CaliforniansForAll College Corps and make an even stronger impact on the East Bay and beyond.

With warm regards,

Cathy Sandeen
President
