Are you considering pursuing a Ph.D. after completing your bachelor’s degree? The CSU funds three programs, described below.
The Graduate Equity Fellowship Program seeks to increase the diversity of students completing graduate degree programs at Cal State East Bay, encourages continuation towards doctoral programs, and promotes consideration of university faculty careers. Applicants must be admitted to a state-supported CSUEB Master's program as a classified or conditionally classified student, have an undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or greater, a graduate GPA of 3.25 or greater, show financial need, and enroll in 8 units or more per semester during academic year 2024-2025. Additional requirements apply. Successful applicants receive grants ranging from $500 up to $2000 per year. The application deadline is May 1st, 2025.
Students selected for the California Pre-Doctoral Program receive $5,000 to explore and prepare to succeed in doctoral studies through faculty mentoring, scholarly research opportunities, travel to visit doctoral-granting institutions, membership in professional associations, and attendance at professional conferences, and also funds a summer research experience at a doctoral-granting institution. Undergraduates and graduate students are eligible to apply. However, you must be enrolled at CSUEB in Spring 2025, and also be enrolled for at least one semester of the academic year 2025-2026. The application deadline is mid-February, 2025.
In addition, there is a Health Professions Track to the Pre-Doctoral Program. The Health Professions Track (HPT) differs in its focus, and follows a separate application and review process. The HPT is designed for students interested in obtaining health professional doctorates with an explicit research component.
The Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) provides financial assistance in the form of a $5,000 dissertation fellowship to help pay tuition, living expenses, etc. plus additional $2,500 grants to support research efforts and $1,500 grants up to two times a year for conference travel for CDIP fellow and mentor. There is also an available optional loan program. These awards are available to doctoral students who are interested in applying and competing for CSU instructional faculty positions after completion of the doctoral degree. The application deadline is mid-February, 2025.
All three programs are designed to increase the diversity of persons qualified to fill instructional faculty positions in the CSU. To learn more, please attend one of our information sessions.
