Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence technologies capable of creating new content—including text, images, audio, and code—based on user prompts. The California State University (CSU) encourages the innovative use of these technologies while ensuring responsible practices that prioritize data security, privacy, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property protection.
1. Data Confidentiality
Do not input confidential or sensitive information (Levels 1 & 2) into publicly accessible generative AI tools.* These tools may not offer secure data protection, and any shared information could become publicly accessible. Always assume that data entered into public AI platforms may be exposed.
For more details, refer to CSU’s Data Classification Levels Definitions, please click here
2. Content Verification
AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies, misleading information, or even fabricated details ("hallucinations"). Additionally, AI-generated material might inadvertently include copyrighted content. It is your responsibility to verify the accuracy and appropriateness of AI-generated outputs before using or sharing them.
3. Phishing & Security Awareness
Generative AI has made phishing scams and deepfake content more sophisticated. Be vigilant against suspicious emails, messages, or AI-generated impersonations. Report any suspected phishing attempts or security threats to your campus help desk immediately.
4. AI Tool Procurement
Before purchasing or implementing any generative AI tool, consult your campus help desk. They can help assess whether an AI tool meets security and compliance standards or if a pre-approved CSU-supported alternative is available.
5. User Privacy
CSU’s Responsible Use Policy governs both user and system administrator activities when using technology services. While CSU has legal and operational obligations requiring access to certain user data, this oversight is not intended to restrict, monitor, or utilize the content of legitimate academic and organizational communications.
