In June, 2022, Cesar Chavez art teacher Lorena Gutierrez led students through the process of making wearable art using upcycled and thrifted clothing. Students created and modeled their beautiful wearable art pieces, while learning about the importance of upcycling and using materials that already exist. You can view their artwork in the following video:

In May 2023 Cesar Chavez advanced art students had the opportunity to take a field trip to Lake Chabot. During the trip, students were able to interact directly with nature, and learn about the close relationship art has with the environment. They were able to reflect on our current climate crisis, and feel empowered to make a difference through their art. You can view some highlights of the field trip in the following video:

Cesar Chavez Middle School CELI Student Ambassador Bryce performed a CELI inspired rap at the school's Latinx Heritage Month event on October 13th, 2023. The rap outlines CELI's goals in helping students learn more about the Earth and becoming empowered to tackle environmental issues. You can check it out here!

In May 2023, Tennyson High School art teacher Julianne Clark had her students create ephemeral and performance art pieces during an artist workshop with Edgar Fabián Frías. Students were encouraged to think critically about questions such as:

  • Why would you save earth from climate change?
  • Besides your loved ones, what would you like to save?
  • How can artists create artwork in ways that don't harm the environment?

This wonderful exercise resulted in some beautiful art pieces and discussions. Here are some of the pictures that were taken during the presentations:
