Academic Structure

In the UK, most undergraduate degrees are 3 year programs, and are focused entirely on one subject area.  (In other words, local Middlesex students don't have General Education requirements.)  Middlesex students have much less flexibility in choosing courses, and will generally take the exact same classes in the same sequence alongside the other students in their degree program.

Exchange students apply to a Middlesex Programme (i.e. major/degree program), and will be enrolled in a specific sequence of 'Year 2' modules (classes) in that programme.  Year 2 modules will be considered upper division coursework at CSU East Bay.  Exchange students are not able to take classes outside the programme they are admitted to at Middlesex, nor are they able to take modules offered for Year 1 or Year 3 students.

Starting in 2024-25 Middlesex University is changing their academic structure.  Previously students would enroll in 4 year-long modules (classes) per year.  As of 2024-25, students will now enroll in 2 modules per semester.  Therefore each of those modules will be worth approximately 2 CSUEB semester courses (6+ credits).

Certain Music, Art and Design or Film and Television students must submit a portfolio.

Application Process and Deadlines

CSUEB Exchange Partners have a two step application process.  First, the exchange partner invites CSUEB's study abroad office to identify (i.e. 'nominate') the students that will be submitting applications.  Second, the Exchange Partner invites the nominated students to complete the Exchange Partner's application.

To complete CSUEB's internal application process, please follow the steps outlined here.

For 2024-25, Middlesex requires students to be nominated by CSUEB by April 1 for Fall 2024 exchange and September 27 for Spring 2025 exchange.

Housing

Students may stay in one of the residence halls administered by Middlesex University, or may choose to search for off campus accommodations. On-campus halls do not include meal plans, so you can choose to cook for yourself and eat outside as you prefer.

Students may also wish to stay off-campus in an apartment. Limited assistance is available from Middlesex' housing office.
