Supportive Pathways at CSUEB

Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students Programs:

As part of the CSU’s commitment to academic preparation and student success, the Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students Program offers pathways for students identified through CSU placement standards as needing additional support with GE Written Communication and GE Math/Quantitative Reasoning requirements. The CSU’s Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students Program also offers additional supportive programs for First-Time-Freshman that are specific and vary at each campus.

Cal State East Bay offers a variety of Supportive Pathway Programs for First-Year Students,  including:

  • EBSí First Year Experience Pathway: This program takes a holistic perspective on supporting students throughout the first year experience. The EBSí First Year Experience pathway leverages existing summer programming and peer support networks, building new programming focused on substantial peer connections. The pathway supports academic success through peer support, coordination, and development of first-year serving STEM courses, and activities focused on STEM identity and belonging in the classroom.

  • East Bay Pathfinders Program: This program builds belonging and community for first-year students via a scaffolded, cohort structured, major and/or social justice focused, academic and co-curricular experience starting in the summer prior to matriculation. This program provides robust summer training and academic year support for faculty and advisors working with FTF, especially in A2 and B4 courses.  It will also provide embedded peer support across FTF taking A2 and B4 courses.

  • East Bay Summer Rise Program: This program is an immersive program for First-Year Freshmen and Transfer students from underserved backgrounds. It provides a home-away-from-home experience, which allows them to experience a slice of college life and help smooth the transition from their previous institution to Cal State East Bay. Participants call Cal State East Bay home during the program days, with all expenses covered through the Pioneer Pathways initiatives, funded through a grant from the Stupski Foundation.

  • Bloc Enrollment: This is designed to support large majors with high FTF enrollment. Co-curricular activities will introduce, deepen, and extend the work of community building in A2 and B4 classrooms, taught by instructors. The goal of bloc enrollment is to create a sense of belonging and community for those within their cohort and to support ant-racist, asset-based inclusive classrooms and the use of active learning and assessment through the INSPIRE program. Tutoring and academic support to support students in timely progression of their degree in A2 and B4 disciplines

  • Embedded Peer Support: Students in category 3 and 4 in quantitative reasoning will be paired with peers (“Community Builders”) who will support them beginning in summer and continuing through the academic year. Tutoring and community building in the STEM Lab and Student Center for Academic Achievement will introduce opportunities for group engagement with academic and non-academic co-curricular events and clubs throughout the university.
