Application Process

Application Process

Check out the following steps on how to complete the CalFresh Application and what you can expect.

  1. Complete the Pre-Screening Eligibility Form or read through the Eligibility Information to determine whether you may qualify for CalFresh
  2. Apply to CalFresh with a Pioneers for HOPE CalFresh Ambassador or apply on your own on getcalfresh.org/s/csueb.
    1. The CalFresh Outreach Team hosts office hours every Monday - Friday, from 10am - 4pm. We offer both virtual and in-person appointments. Please schedule an appointment via BayAdvisor.
  3. The CalFresh application takes 30 - 40 business days to process. After you submit your application, you will need to have a phone interview with a Department of Social Services (DPSS) Caseworker and submit verification documents.
    1. The Interview:  An interview is required to complete your CalFresh application. The county office will call you or mail you a notification of appointment with the date and time for your interview. The phone call may come from a blocked, anonymous, spam-likely, or unknown number. Please answer any phone calls you receive during this time as it is very difficult to reschedule your interview. If you missed your interview or have not heard from the county, call your county’s customer service number to reschedule your interview.
    2. Verification Documents: You will be required to provide verification documents to your county office. It is recommended that you submit verification documents at the time of your application or within the 30 day period. After your phone interview, your caseworker may request additional documents and should provide you directions for how to submit them.
      1. Examples of verification documents:
        1. Proof of Identification
        2. Proof of Income
        3. Lease / rental agreement
        4. Financial Aid Award Letter
        5. Copy of your class schedule
  4. If approved, you will receive an EBT card in the mail. You will receive your PIN in a separate piece of mail. You can then use your benefits at most grocery stores, convenience stores, and farmer’s markets.

In order to keep receiving CalFresh benefits, you will need to submit mandatory reports. The Semi-Annual Report or SAR7 is due 6 months after your application date. The Recertification Report is due 12 months after your application date.
