Honoring André Johnson's 27 Years of Service

André Johnson, the Associate Vice President of Human Resources and Payroll Services at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB), has recently announced his retirement after 27 years of dedicated service. Under his leadership, André has managed Human Resources, Payroll, Professional Development, and Worker's Compensation. He has made a significant impact on the university and the people he worked with.
André's journey at CSUEB began in March 1997, when he started as an employee. However, he first stepped on CSUEB’s campus as a student and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration.

Later, he earned a Master's in Public Administration. André's personal goals and academic endeavors led him to a profession that utilized his ability to touch the lives of those around him.
One person in particular, Tony Tijero, the Director of Payroll Services at CSUEB, has worked with André for 15 years. According to Tony, André has helped him through many of life’s challenges – at work and outside of work. Tony not only respects André as his manager but also as a trusted friend and someone he can depend on. André's unwavering support and guidance helped the Payroll department navigate through challenging times and achieve remarkable success. As Tony explains, "We have gone through several challenges, and André has been supportive and navigated us through the issues. He stood by me when challenges arrived on campus. I appreciate it. On the other hand, he would provide sound advice when needed."
HR Manager Geraldine Torbik appreciated that André’s door was always open. He took time to listen and answer our questions. More importantly, he would always listen to our funny stories and share a good laugh with us. It really helped keep things positive, especially during challenging times. André’s institutional knowledge and experience have helped our department navigate through complex and challenging situations and his trust in the team’s ability to work independently has encouraged problem-solving and a more collaborative environment.
Michelle Webber, who worked as the HR Coordinator at CSUEB, has known André for several years. She believes that André's greatest impact is always having an open-door policy, and any ideas and concerns are always on the table. He is always supportive. André demonstrated his support through the loss of Michelle's father, and showing his compassion during that time was paramount. As a leader, he has the utmost integrity and support of his team. André is a leader who was a part of the team and supported his employees in any capacity. His legacy will be leadership, integrity, respect, and honor. It has been a privilege to work under his leadership.
I personally met André during a conference presentation I was giving in Chicago in the Fall of 2018. Little did I know that I would soon be working for him the following year. Despite being a commuter from a long distance away, I have now been with André's team for five years, exceeding my initial promise of three. André is an incredibly supportive and knowledgeable manager, who takes the time to know every employee by name and the department they work in, which is remarkable. I consider him to be a fair, consistent, and reliable manager and one of the best I have ever worked with in the CSU system.
When asked about his most memorable moment while employed at CSUEB, André stated that he was named AVP of HR, but first, he was named Director of HR. He had always dreamed of leading an HR organization, and his steadfastness and determination helped him achieve this life goal. As a part of his journey, he continued to rely on what he learned while growing up to treat others as he would want to be treated. He has always been approachable, and through it all, he has not changed.
André's legacy at CSUEB is that he made a difference and touched people’s lives. He has always tried to help individuals on campus and his team to achieve their career goals and fulfill their dreams. If he could do it all again, André would tell his younger self, "Do not fret about what the future holds for you. You will be blessed beyond your wildest dreams, and as you know, God is in control and you will be where He wants you to be."
After retirement, André plans to spend his days with his beautiful wife and two adult sons. He enjoys traveling with his family whenever time permits. CSUEB and the people who have had the honor of working with André will miss him. His leadership, integrity, respect, and honor will leave a lasting impression on the university and the people he worked with. Congratulations, André, on a well-deserved retirement!

ITS Launching Multi-Year Campus-Wide Upgrade to Windows 11
|

|
Yes, it is coming. Like everything else in technology, an upgrade is inevitable and cannot be avoided. For multiple reasons, ITS has already launched a multi-year effort to make the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and will be focusing first on academic-centric environments such as labs and classrooms.

|
|
As we all know, the technology used in academic environments are critical to the successful outcomes for our students. This is exactly why ITS will be doing a full audit of all software and hardware across the campus to begin the transition from one operating system to another. If you are closely involved with software and technology solutions that may impact your academic environments, we encourage you to reach out to ITS to have some discussions on how we can make this transition together as a team. The end of life for Windows 10 support from Microsoft is October 2025, so we will push to have all individual and lab computers upgraded or replaced by then, with any outliers completed by the end of 2025.

How would you define your role on campus?
As a police officer at CSUEB, my role is dynamic and multifaceted, encompassing a wide range of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the campus community. I am committed to fostering a secure environment conducive to learning and personal growth. My duties involve patrolling the campus grounds, responding to emergencies, and proactively addressing potential security threats. Beyond law enforcement, I actively engage with students, faculty, and staff, building positive relationships through community outreach programs and educational initiatives. In addition to maintaining a visible and approachable presence, I collaborate with campus stakeholders to develop and implement safety protocols, conduct awareness campaigns, and contribute to a comprehensive approach to campus security. Through dedication and a community-oriented mindset, I strive to promote a sense of security and trust among those within the college community.
What makes you passionate about your work/duties?
I am deeply passionate about being a police officer on the CSUEB campus because it allows me to play a crucial role in creating a safe and supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff. Working in a college setting provides a unique opportunity to positively impact the lives of young individuals during a crucial phase of personal and academic development. I am driven by a genuine desire to contribute to the well-being of the campus community, fostering a sense of security that enables individuals to thrive in their educational pursuits. Being a police officer at CSUEB allows me to build relationships with diverse groups of people, engage in community-oriented policing, and implement preventive measures to address potential issues before they escalate. It's not just about enforcing the law; it's about creating a positive and trusting relationship between law enforcement and the community, ultimately contributing to a campus culture where everyone feels safe, supported, and empowered.
Would you like to tell us about a recent accomplishment?
One of my most significant accomplishments is the culmination of a rewarding 25-year career with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, where I served at the Office of Emergency Services. Throughout this tenure, I gained invaluable experience in emergency response, crisis management, and community safety. Retiring from such a distinguished position not only represents the depth of my expertise but also underscores my commitment to public service. Looking forward, I am excited to embark on a new chapter in my career with Cal State University East Bay (CSUEB). The prospect of bringing my wealth of experience to the campus community and contributing to the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff is both motivating and fulfilling. I am eager to leverage my skills and continue making a positive impact in a university setting, fostering a secure environment conducive to learning and growth.
