Thursday workshop: 9 realities of caring for an elderly parent

Join author/teacher Stefania Shaffer on Thursday, Jan. 16, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Biella Room of the Library, as she shares her wisdom and experience with one of the most important topics facing many adult children: taking care of your elderly parent.
9 Realities of Caring for an Elderly Parent: A Love Story of a Different Kind is a non-fiction narrative of what every adult child should expect when coming home to care for your elderly parent until the very end. This book answers the question 45 million adult children are worrying about this year: What will happen when Mom or Dad can no longer care for themselves? Chronicling the author’s experience of moving back home after nearly a decade away, the author’s first realization that her mother could not be alone in her own house anymore was sobering indeed.

Shaffer left behind a successful career in corporate America to follow her heart into education. She went on to earn a teaching credential from San Francisco State University and is now currently teaching English Language Arts to seventh-graders. Her first novel is the fictional story of an underdog student in Heroes Don’t Always Wear Capes. The obstacles that every student faces are spooled together creating protagonist Vandra Zandinski, the character we root for because there is a little bit of Vandra in all of us. This coming-of-age story will resonate long after you finish the last page. It is a priceless reminder to teachers that for that one quiet kid in the back of the class, you just might be the best part of the day. Her second novel, 9 Realities of Caring for an Elderly Parent: A Love Story of a Different Kind, was released in August 2013. Based on her own experience, it is a funny, compassionate account of what one can expect from a daunting role if you are the adult child coming home to care for an elderly parent until the very end.
