Pioneer newspaper relaunches 'acclaimed' Spanish section

The Pioneer, Cal State East Bay's student-run newspaper, is re-launching its Spanish-Bilingual metro section as part of its weekly editions starting with the fall quarter.
The bilingual section, which first ran from January 2012 to January 2013, is the first university-published Spanish-Bilingual news section in California.
In its previous 12 issues, the Spanish-Bilingual section of the Pioneer featured stories on immigration, hunger, Latino art and music, economic development, Hayward politics, and more.
Natalia Aldana, the newspaper’s former editor-in-chief and 2013 CSUEB alumna, created and designed the bilingual edition. She is coordinating the relaunch. The section will feature stories translated from English to Spanish as well as original content.
Aldana said she is “seeking fluently bilingual Spanish speakers to work on the exciting re-launch of its Spanish-Bilingual metro section.”
“The Spanish section requires energetic bilingual students who can work as translators, copy editors and writers to work in our dynamic newsroom environment,” Aldana said. “Work experience is not required.
Aldana told the Bay Area News Group last year that the Bilingual-Spanish edition “represents journalism at its core because it increases access to information to all members of the community, moves past language barriers and moves towards diversity in media.
"I saw that places where the Pioneer is dropped off, a lot of people don't speak English," Aldana said. "There's an untapped market there for writers and advertisers as well. Our words were not being used."
