CSUEB students, staff invited to June 20 ‘Hot Salsa, Cool Blues’ night in Hayward

Cal State East Bay students and staff are invited to attend the opening of Downtown Hayward Street Party season when it opens June 20 with bands on five stages, a 100-vehicle car show, street entertainers, food, and family fun as part of “Hot Salsa and Cool Blues Night.”
The event kicks off a series of three traditional Thursday night street parties, with “Star Spangled Summer” scheduled July 18 and “California Dreamin’ ” on Aug. 15.
The June 20 party will be celebrated on B Street between Foothill Boulevard and City Hall on Watkins Street, with an extension north along Foothill Boulevard to accommodate the new Jazz Breezeway Stage adjacent Julian’s BBQ.
“Cal State East Bay is Hayward’s university and we want to make sure students and employees get a special invitation to participate,” said Kim Huggett, president of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce. “And with free parking in 12 downtown lots, all of our venues should be within easy walking distance.”
Among the bands will be the salsa ensemble Patron on the B Street Stage; the Latin, funk and rock of Third Sol in the Blues Garden at Newman Park; the classic rockabilly and old time rock and roll of Mitch Polzak and the Royal Deuces on the Bistro Patio Stage; The Sound Dogs on the Buffalo Bills stage; and Bad Boy Bruce and The Blues Mob on the new Jazz Breezeway stage adjacent Julian’s BBQ at 22532 Foothill Blvd. A band yet to be announced will headline the Buffalo Bills Stage.
Additional fun will be provided by street entertainers, face-painters and games for kids. Adults will enjoy the 100 hot rods and classics at the Vic Hubbard Auto Supply Car Show on Main Street.
“Hayward street parties have been bringing families to our city center to celebrate the summer for 13 years,” said Huggett, president of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce. “These free events are part of a great Hayward tradition of community celebrations that appeal to all ages.”
The street party series, in its 14th year, is made possible through partnership of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce, the City of Hayward, and the Downtown Business Improvement Area. The DBIA is a consortium of businesses that work together to make the downtown area an attractive destination for shopping, dining, entertainment, and the arts.
