Mary Ellen Callahan, B.A. music 1984, has exciting news. She’s coming to the Bay Area for two performances – her first here in 20 years – and expects to release a solo, two-CD set with piano in early-2011.

Many of the CD recordings were done in the Cal State East Bay Recital Hall, Music Building 1055, in 2009.

Callahan is taking this opportunity to share an abundance of her favorite music pieces live with people who love music, to sing again in her much-missed and beloved hometown, and raise funds to complete the CD.

The first concert, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, will include pieces by Purcell, Mozart, Mendelssohn Hensel, Brahms, Massenet, Fauré, Weill, Krenek and Bernstein. The second, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, of music different from the first, will include pieces by Bach, Handel, Schubert, Brahms, Puccini, Wolf, Mahler, Bacon, Barber and Bowles.

“Each song is a heart-melting jewel of harmony and melody, with beautiful texts and poems,” says Callahan, who resides in New York and performs throughout the country.

Both concerts will be at the family business, Piedmont Piano Company, 1728 San Pablo Avenue, at 18th Street, Oakland. There is free street parking. Her accompanist will be Miles Graber.

Concert tickets are $40 for fundraisers/supporters/fans, and $20 for students/seniors/the unemployed. Reservations for both performances are being taken at: mec@maryellencallahan.com
