Radio program focuses on 'Inclusive Dance' class

Cal State East Bay’s Inclusive Dance program got airtime recently on KPFA-radio’s “Breaking the Ice.”   

The program came to the Cal State East Bay dance class that Eric Kupers, assistant professor of theatre and dance, teaches in partnership with the university, the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center and Clausen House, a non-profit, Oakland facility helping peolle with developmental disabilitieds work, live and serve in the community.

The 29-minute program begins the CSUEB program where persons with limited speech are learning to choreograph and dance to Taiko drumming.

From there, it leads to a conversation with Josh Elwood, KPFA sound engineer, who is both a client and board member at Clausen House, and with others.

KPFA writes, “After centuries of stigma and exclusion, people with cognitive disabilities are out and about in our communities. Many work at jobs with able-bodied co-workers and live independently, or in small group homes, in many neighborhoods.”
