East Bay author Brian Copeland will perform his celebrated one-man show, Not a Genuine Black Man, at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, as a benefit for the school's theatre arts program.
The memoir adapted from the show (available at Amazon) was assigned reading for CSUEB's Freshman Convocation for several years. Copeland's poignant and funny tales from his childhood in neighboring San Leandro — which was named America's most racist suburb in 1971, the year before Copeland's family moved there — address universal themes of family, race, and identity.
