Defining America: Exclusions Apply

Cal State East Bay will host activist, lawyer and writer Deepa Iyer on Jan. 23 in celebration of Social Justice Awareness Month. 

Iyer is currently a senior fellow at the Center for Social Inclusion, where she focuses on equity and solidarity. With 15 years of racial and immigrant-focused work in both the government and nonprofit sector, Iyer has spent years studying issues related to post-9/11 America, civil rights, immigration, and social change movements led by immigrants and people of color. 

She is the author of “We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Mulsim and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future,” which won an American Book Award in 2016 and was selected by the American Librarians Association’s Booklist for a top 10 multicultural non-fiction ranking. In addition, Iyer has had several editorials published in various publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, Al-Jazeera American, and The Nation.
