Cal State East Bay Launches New Transfer Student Initiatives

Cal State East Bay welcomed more than 2,400 transfer students this fall from across the region, accounting for more than half of this year’s new undergraduates.

In response to a growing number of students transferring into CSUEB, the university launched Transfer Student Programs in an effort to “elevate institutional support for transfer students and ensure a transfer receptive culture,” Dr. Diana Balgas, executive director for Transfer Student Programs, said. 

In fall 2016, CSUEB established the Eta Epsilon Chapter of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, an academic honor society specifically for transfer students. According to Balgas, Tau Sigma was created to promote and recognize the achievements of transfer students. Cal State East Bay is the second California State University to charter a chapter and the first CSU in Northern California. Membership is by invitation only and students must have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher after their first quarter at Cal State East Bay.

Between fall 2014 and winter 2016, nearly 1,300 students had completed their first term and had met the requirement of a 3.5 GPA. At the inaugural induction ceremony that took place on Oct. 27, a total of 384 transfer students were inducted into the society.

Transfer Student Programs will also contribute to university-wide efforts to improve transfer student success through a combination of advocacy and fostering collaboration between the university and regional community partners. For example, programs will help students navigate the new campus, introduce them to events and activities beyond the classroom, and offer seminars and workshops to help them achieve their educational and professional goals.
