Information for Preschool & Early Childhood Educators

Preschool Teachers & Childcare

Are you interested in working at a preschool or in childcare for children ages 0 - 5? Many early childhood education positions require permits from the state of California; these permits demonstrate your education, expertise, and experience in the early childhood development field.

Child Development Permits are issued by California's Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and authorize the permit holder to provide care and instruction for children in a child development program. Permits are required for jobs in centers funded by the Child Development Division of the California Department of Education; many private childcare programs also require employees to hold permits.

The Child Development Permit has six levels, each of which are outlined below:

  • Assistant Teacher
  • Associate Teacher
  • Teacher
  • Master Teacher
  • Site Supervisor
  • Program Director
