RafaelHernandez Faculty Profile

Dr. Rafael Hernandez is Deputy Provost, Academic Resources and Planning at California State University, East Bay. Prior to this appointment, he served as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Administration in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS), Chair of the Department of Music and Director of the Multimedia Graduate Program. Rafael is a self-professed composer, teacher, and nerd with a passion for improving the human condition by blending creativity, education, and technical innovation.  His creative work and research involve music, technology, and gaming. He is creator of IV-V-I: The Harmony Card Game and the Music Ed family of fonts, use around the world by music educators in K-5 classrooms. Comfortable moving between orchestras, ensembles, and the forces of classical music; massive datasets encompassing student success, financials, and other facets of a university; and conversations with those who deserve to see themselves in the decisions that both guide their work and impact their livelihoods.
