What is this program?

The BET McNair Scholars Program (Award #P217A220220), funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is committed to fostering educational equity by encouraging, supporting, and preparing students with high academic potential to pursue advanced degrees.

The program is designed specifically for low-income, first-generation college students and those from historically underrepresented groups, offering comprehensive graduate school preparation through personalized mentorship, developmental workshops, and hands-on research and internship opportunities. Faculty Advisor Purpose

A faculty advisor in the BET McNair Scholars Program plays an essential role in fostering the academic and professional growth of participating scholars. By providing tailored guidance and support, Faculty Advisors help students define and achieve academic goals, navigate the complexities of the graduate school application process, and offer strategic advice on long-term career planning. Through regular, at least monthly, one-on-one meetings, faculty advisors assist students in identifying their strengths, addressing academic challenges, and offering both intellectual and emotional support. Additionally, they play a key role in building students’ confidence and facilitating connections within their chosen academic disciplines, contributing to their sustained success in graduate education and future careers.

Research Mentor Purpose

The role of a research mentor in the BET McNair Scholars Program is to provide crucial guidance and support as students engage in academic research. Scholars often join ongoing research projects, where research mentors help them develop core research skills, including project design, execution, and analysis. By offering critical feedback and fostering a comprehensive understanding of the research process, mentors ensure that students gain the expertise and practical experience necessary for success in graduate-level studies. This mentorship is instrumental in cultivating independent, meaningful research experiences that promote students' growth as emerging scholars and prepare them for the academic rigor of graduate education.
